CHAPTER I

INTRODUCTION

A. Background of the Study

In the era of globalization, English is a very important because it is the one of an international language which is used in most aspects of life in the worlds, such as business, tourism, economic, social, and education. It is used not merely to communicate with people from foreign countries, but also to carry out the educational institution. English is one of the main subject in Indonesian Secondary Schools where learning English effectively is a must. In Webstern’s dictionary “language is a systematic means of community ideas or feelings by the use of conventionalized signs, sounds, gestures, or mark having understood meaning”.

Like Indonesian language, English is an important thing to master. To master English language, a learner of English should master the four basic skills, they are reading, writing, listening, and speaking. In addition to those skills, a learner should master language components, such as grammar, pronunciation, intonation, vocabulary, etc. among some language components; grammar has been identified as the most challenging aspect for the learners of English to learn. For some learners think that it is uninteresting subject in teaching learning, and when they learn English they try to avoid the grammar because it is such a confusing rules and hard to be understood. They have to memorize important grammatical rules, such tense, for example simple past tense. In this case they have to be able to differentiate the form of the verb and usage. All of those are threatening for learner of English especially Indonesia learners since the rules in Indonesian language are not as complicated as English.

According to Craig Hancock, in his book of meaning-centered Grammar “Grammar is the natural, inherent, meaning-making system of the language, a system that governs the way words come together to form meaning; grammar is also the study of that system, the various theories or perspectives that attempt to understand and describe it”. (Craig Hancock, Meaning-centered Grammar, (London Oakville: Equinox, 2005. P.6.).

One of the major objectives of teaching a foreign language is to enable the leaner to become autonomous, that it is ability to continue learning the foreign language without the teacher’s guide. Sooner or later they have to stand on their own feet. There are the numbers of factors which contribute to the ability to be autonomous. Such as the teacher, learners and their learning strategies. Those are the factors which are instrumental in the process of self-direction. According to H Douglas Brown “learning is acquiring or getting of knowledge of a subject or a skill by study, experience, or instruction.

Teaching cannot be defined apart from learning. Nathan Gage (1964:269) noted that “to satisfy the practical demands of education, theories of learning must be ‘stood on their head’ so as yield theories of learning. “ teaching is guiding and facilitating learning, enabling the learner to learn, learner will determine teacher’s philosophy of education, teacher’s teaching style, teacher’s approach, methods, and classroom techniques.

The name of the method often makes people curious, they wonder how people can learn a foreign language in just hear “Audio” the name of the method with which language teachers are very active in dominating classroom activities.
